Army Football - Summer Central: Inside the Huddle
INSIDE THE HUDDLE
In today's scrimmage, the coaching staff had the offense and defense work on the situational components of the game. Whereby it was not uncommon to see the offense replaying the situation at least three times even after a touchdown was scored.
And of course it is a controlled scrimmage; the hitting was minimal, if at all.
OK, so the number issue...
Everyone on black squad was wearing the jersey number of the players on Eastern Michigan, whereby the Scout team was allowing the "A" team to get familiar with the Black Knights' 2009 season's opening day opponent.
The first team offense took the field and it took less than five plays to score a touchdown. Following a few good runs to the right by Pat Mealy, Trent Steelman took the ball himself to the left for a 40 plus yard touchdown run. The ball was brought back to the 30 yard line, and shortly after, Steelman ran for his second touchdown run of the game.
When the first team defense took the field, Mario Hill intercepted the scout team's first play from scrimmage.
On the second series for the offense, Chip Bowden completed a 45 yard pass.
Steelman capped off the third offensive series with an 18 yard TD pass to Damion Hunter. Replayed the play for practice and Mealy took it 18 yards down the left sideline.
Bowden then came in and pitched left to slotback Malcolm Brown for an 18 yard TD.
Brown took advantage of the absence of injured slotbacks Ian Smith , George Fletcher and Jameson Carter . "You have to remember those guys are out today, but will return next week, so he is receiving a lot of reps today." says Army Head Coach, Rich Ellerson.
Brown is surprisingly quick, and with his size, he brings a lot of momentum out of the backfield. He is deceptively agile and quick, along with having a nose for the end zone, which has put him there twice today.
Not to be forgotten, senior quarterback Carson Williams followed by hitting Hunter on a 55 yard over the shoulder pass for a TD.
At the half, it was the White squad 40 and the Black squad 3.
Linebacker Stephen Anderson stepped up for the defense and intercepted a "Easter Michigan" pass off a deflection
Jenkins looked impressive on his 50 yard touchdown pass to the scout team "Eastern Michigan" impersonator, who made an over the shoulder reception for Black team with freshman Brian Cobb on the coverage.
There will be "much" more to come from GoBlackKnights.com and today's scrimmage.
