January 12, 2012TULSA, Okla. (AP) - Kodi Maduka and Eric McClellan scored 14 points apiece and Tulsa defeated UTEP 59-48 Wednesday night.
Maduka also had seven rebounds and Jordan Clarkson added 10 points for the Golden Hurricane (8-9, 1-2 Conference USA), which took the lead for good thanks to a 15-3 run late in the first half. UTEP trailed 28-22 at halftime and stayed close, getting within one point four times in the second half, but couldn't overtake Tulsa, which finished the game with a 13-3 spurt.
"It was a great win for us, a much needed win," said Tulsa head coach Doug Wojcik. "I called timeout with five minutes to go to remind them that we needed to finish.
"They did a great job. They extended the lead and we played excellent defense."
Michael Perez led the Miners (8-9, 1-2) with 14 points.
Tulsa shot 46 percent from the field while UTEP made 42 percent of its shots.
"Probably the biggest stat of the night was our nine turnovers in the first half, and then we only had one turnover in the second half," said Wojcik. "We had a positive assist to turnover ratio. We held them below their scoring average, so I was very pleased."
