Tulsa squeaks past Grand Canyon
TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Lew Evans made a free throw with a second left to give Tulsa a 66-65 victory over Grand Canyon on Wednesday night in a coaching matchup of former Phoenix Suns teammates Danny Manning and Dan Majerle.
Rashad Smith led Tulsa (4-7), coached by Manning, with 15 points and nine rebounds. Shaquille Harrison also had 15 points, and James Woodard had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Demetrius Walker led Grand Canyon (5-5) with 20 points, and Killian Larson had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
"You look at the stat sheet, and you shoot 40% from the field. You shoot 27% from 3 point range. You shoot 52% from the free throw line, and we win the game," said Manning. "We grinded one out. Offense was ugly tonight. We made stops when we needed to. We made that free throw when we needed it. We just kept grinding and scratched that one out.
"Grand Canyon executed and made shots. They shot 6-of-10 from 3-point range in the first half. You don't think that they can shoot much better than that. They come out in the second half and they go 4-of-5. We gave up the long ball, and they knocked them down. There's not much you can say."
Evans made two free throws with 26 seconds left to give Tulsa a 65-64 lead. Demetrius Walker was fouled on the next possession, and hit the second free throw to tie it at 65.
Evans drew the final foul with a second to go and made his second attempt to give Tulsa the victory.
The game featured 10 ties and eight lead changes.
Tulsa will be on the road for its next two games. They travel to play at TCU this Saturday, Dec. 21st and then face Maryland on Dec. 29th. Tulsa returns home to the Reynolds Center for a January 4th game against Cal State Fullerton.
