July 1, 2009
It was over early in the first international hoop experience forWazzu men's hoop sophomores DeAngelo Casto and Klay Thompson. Casto and Thompson both started for the USA in their preliminary round game against Iran and led the Americans to a 30-13 lead in the first quarter and eventually an easy 106-55 victory over the Iranians at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand.
Casto was on fire, shooting 83% from the field in making five of his six shot attempts and finished with 10 points and two rebounds in just over 15-1/2 minutes of play while Thompson was not quite as hot but tossed in nine points and brought down three boards in approximately 19-1/2 minutes on the court.
Iran took a quick 3-0 lead after canning a trey to open the game's scoring but the USA tied it, 4-4, on a shot by Casto. The Iranians stayed close to the Americans and were down only 19-13 when Thompson nailed a three-ball that helped the USA end the first frame on a 11-0 run.
The USA will next play France on Thursday, July 2 at 3pm [Pacific].
