On Monday afternoon, Cedar Hill (TX) defensive end Deven Lamp announced his commitment to Tulsa, where he made an official visit this past weekend. He had been a longtime Iowa State commit before reopening his recruiting process earlier this month.

"I felt it in my heart, and I knew God wanted me to choose (Tulsa)," he told Inside Tulsa Sports shortly after announcing his decision. "It's a great place."

Lamp’s time in Tulsa from January 27-29 made a big impression on the 6-foot-5 and 220 pound rush end.

“It was amazing -- just an unbelievable time,” he said. “My host was Robert Revels, who is a great guy to say the least. He and the other players really welcomed me and made me feel like a part of them. It was a great time.”

The Tulsa coaching staff also influenced Lamp’s decision to pick the Golden Hurricane.

“They are a fun and energetic staff and really love their players,” he described. “Coach (Bill) Young and (Aaron) Fletcher have been my main recruiters, and they have done an outstanding job of presenting the University.”

Lamp also took an official visit to Vanderbilt on January 20 and also had offers from Iowa State, Air Force, Army, Nevada, Cornell, Holy Cross, Illinois State and others. Baylor and San Diego State had shown recent interest as well.

Lamp is a former high school teammate of Tulsa defensive end Trevis Gipson at Cedar Hill. Lamp helped the Longhorns to an 11-3 record and 6-1 district mark this season, earning a spot in the Dallas Morning News' SportsDay Top 100.

As a senior, Lamp collected 45 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, seven sacks, three QB hurries, two pass deflections and one forced fumble. He was a First-Team All-District selection in District 7-6A.

“I bring a speed threat and athleticism off the edge,” he said of his strengths on the football field. “I have a will to get better and better each day.”

Tulsa currently has 21 commitments in the 2017 recruiting class, including 11 from the state of Texas.
