TU comeback falls short
Tulsa scored 20 straight points to take a 34-31 lead over Marshall in the second half, but the Herd scored the final two touchdowns to grab a 45-34 win in at Chapman Stadium.
Tulsa forced five turnovers in the game, including an interception and four fumble recoveries, which helped the Golden Hurricane erase a 21-0 first-quarter deficit. Marshall scored touchdowns on its first three possessions.
The Herd appeared to be on its way to a fourth score in the first quarter, but TU linebacker Shawn Jackson intercepted a tipped pass inside Tulsa's 10 yard line. The Hurricane offense finally got on track, scoring two touchdowns, and TU trailed 31-14 at halftime.
Tulsa was on fire to start the second half, scoring on each of its first four possessions after halftime. The Hurricane completed two touchdown drives, and two other drives netted field goals, putting TU on top 34-31.
Unfortunately, Tulsa couldn't hold on. Marshall scored on two straight drives late in the fourth quarter. Their final TD came after Tulsa quarterback Dane Evans was sacked on fourth down inside Tulsa's own 10 yard line.
TU senior running back Trey Watts rushed for a career-high 169 yards, but redshirt freshman quarterback Dane Evans completed just 13-of-39 passes for 161 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Tulsa linebacker Shawn Jackson finished with 14 tackles, an interception and two fumble recoveries.
Marshall quarterback Rakeem Cato completed 33-of-58 passes for 456 yards and five touchdowns.
