Umblance remains solid with Tulsa

6-foot-1, 180 pound wide receiver Brodrick Umblance committed to Tulsa in early June. While other schools continued to pursue, he remains solid with the Golden Hurricane.

TU was the first to offer the speedster, who runs the 40-yard dash in the 4.4 second range, while he was receiving heavy interest from North Texas, SMU, UTSA and Texas State. After his pledge to Tulsa, other programs continued to heavily pursue him, but once he took his official visit to Tulsa on January 17, Umblance knew for certain he had made the right decision.

"Tulane and North Texas were still trying to get me to visit," he said. "Tulsa already felt like home to me, and the visit was just reassurance.

"The visit was great. I had been looking forward to it since Thanksgiving. I'm glad I got to meet some new teammates."

The Arlington (Texas) Oakridge product has been close friends with Tulsa sophomore receiver Josh Atkinson for four years, which gave the Hurricane an advantage from the beginning.

"Josh Atkinson was my host during the visit," he explained. "I met all the coaches once again. I got to see the athletic complexes and the classrooms. I also got to see some of the athletic dorms and apartments. I got to meet some of the guys on the team that I knew and some I didn't know. I spent a great deal of time talking to each coach about the process, and I met some professors that I will have next year."

Umblance also got a better look at the campus and football facilities.

"The campus is just right for me -- not too small and not too big," he described. "Everything is top of the line. The football facilities aren't the biggest, but they are, in my opinion, the best. They don't need to be big or flashy to be great."

Umblance also spent time with Assistant Coach Dan Bitson, who recently moved from running backs to receivers.

"I like Coach Bitson a lot," he added. "I'm looking forward to being coached by him."

Oakridge struggled to a 3-6 record this season, but Umblance was a bright spot for the offense, making 39 receptions for 648 yards and two touchdowns. His longest reception of the season was 91 yards, and he averaged 16.6 yards per catch.

In the final game of the season, Umblance filled in at quarterback, completing 7-of-12 passes for 73 yards and one touchdown.

"It didn't go as well as I'd hoped," he said of his senior season. "We lost a lot of good lineman and linebackers, which kind of hurt us. Individually I did good, but I wanted more. There's always room for improvement at any level, so when I get to TU, I will improve and hopefully put up some big numbers."
