Johnson talks TU pledge

6-foot-1, 190 pound Alto (TX) athlete Keenen Johnson picked up an offer from Tulsa on Wednesday, and two days later, he committed to the Golden Hurricane.

"I really felt comfortable with Coach (Calvin) Lowry and Coach (Philip) Montgomery," he told Inside Tulsa Sports on Friday. "I looked more into the school and felt like it was the right decision."

Johnson chose TU over offers from SMU, Louisiana-Lafayette and Incarnate Word. He hasn't been on Tulsa's campus yet but will make an official visit in January.

As a dual-threat quarterback for Alto, Johnson led the Yellow Jackets to an 11-1 record after losing in the second round of the state playoffs.

"I felt it went well," he said of his senior season. "I accomplished a few (goals), but not the big one I really wanted -- a state championship."

Johnson did most of his damage on the ground, running the ball 217 times for 2,669 yards and 38 touchdowns. He averaged 12.3 yards per rush. On defense, Johnson recorded 42 tackles, three tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and eight pass breakups.

Keenen Johnson rushed for almost 2,700 yards as a senior.

Tulsa recruited Johnson purely as an athlete, but the dynamic playmaker believes the Hurricane will utilize his talents on offense.

"I feel my strength is on the offensive side of the ball and as an athlete, but Coach Montgomery says he likes me as a slot receiver," added Johnson.

This is Tulsa's second verbal commitment of the week, along with NEO A&M defensive back Antonio Cole, who chose Tulsa on Sunday. Those two bring the Hurricane's total to 14 current commitments in the 2016 recruiting class.

TU still has several needs to meet, including additions to the defensive line, so expect four to six more prospects to be added to the class in the near future as signing day approaches in early February.
