The University of Tulsa coaching staff didn't have to travel far to secure the pledge of Jenks (OK) High School wide receiver and safety prospect, Jesse Meyer, a 6-foot-4 and 195-pounder. According to his high school coach Allan Trimble, Meyer had looks from a number of schools, but Tulsa was the only school to offer. Trimble told our staff that he feels Tulsa has landed another sleeper who has been under the radar and has tremendous potential, due to his size and speed.

"It's kind of hard to call Jesse a sleeper prospect," said Trimble. "He's done it all for us this past season, but he just didn't get the attention he deserved. His upside is so good. He's 6-foot-4 and 195-pounds and has tremendous speed (4.5-second forty yard dash). Because he has run track, he hasn't worked out on weights, so I feel he can play at wide receiver in college at 210 to 215-pounds."
Meyer had an outstanding season for the nationally ranked Jenks Trojans and was on the receiving end of a number of passes from teammate and quarterback Andrew Brewer, who has committed to Northwestern.
On offense, Meyer caught 36 passes for 811 yards and nine scores. He also returned two punts for 100 yards.
From the safety position, Meyer recorded 45 tackles, including 33 unassisted. He had one tackle for a loss, one fumble recovery, four interceptions and two blocked kicks. He took one of his interceptions 96 yards for a touchdown.
Meyer's play this past season earned him All-Conference and Class 6A All-State honors.
Coach Trimble discussed Meyer's strengths and compared him with a couple of his other players that flew under the radar, but have made a name for themselves at the Division I level.
"Jesse's situation is a lot like that of Jay Henry, a linebacker that wasn't recruited that heavily and ended up at West Virginia," explained Trimble. "Also, Garrett Mills, who is starring at Tulsa now, wasn't highly recruited either. So, I think Tulsa is getting a real steal in Jesse, and I feel he'll be a great player for them."
"One of the best things about Jesse is that he's still growing. He is similar to Mills, in that he has great natural hands. He's a solid route runner and runs the deep routes really well. He's also great at coming back off a deep route. His stamina is phenomenal. Players will stay with him for maybe 10 or 15 yards, and then his legs just keep churning, and he runs right by them. I think his being a track man has a lot to do with his ability to run the long routes."
Although Meyer has been a standout in track during his days at Jenks, he commented that he would concentrate on football when he arrived at Tulsa.
"I run the 200 and 400 meters at Jenks and also run on the 1,600 meter relay team," Meyer stated. "My best time in the 200 meters is 22.4-seconds and my best in the 400 meters is 49.1 seconds. Last season, our 1,600 meter relay team earned All-American honors after our performance at the National Indoor Classic in New York City."
Meyer discussed the other schools that had shown interest in him the last few months and his recent visit to the Tulsa campus.
"I visited Tulsa last weekend and they offered, so I committed. I had a number of schools show interest, like Wyoming, Rice, SMU, Richmond, Ohio University and Nebraska, but none of them offered."
"On my visit, I met with some of the coaches, including (Assistant) Coach (Matt) Wells, who was my recruiter, (Assistant) Coach (Keith) Patterson, (Assistant) Coach (Bob) Schultz and (Head) Coach (Steve) Kragthorpe. They took me to dinner and talked to me about playing wide receiver and how I had a chance, if I worked hard during the summer, to compete for playing time next season."
"All the coaches are real straight forward, and I feel that I'll fit into their system well. I also know that they are putting together a solid recruiting class this year to go along with some good returning players. I hung out with my host, Paul Smith. I didn't know him before, but I'd heard of him from his high school days, and we had a good time together."
Meyer concluded by talking about his strengths as a receiver and what his plans are prior to enrolling at Tulsa.
"I plan to continue with track this spring and then I'll start concentrating on football. I don't have a workout routine set up yet, but I will before the summer. I want to just play football at Tulsa. I feel the strengths I will bring to Tulsa are that I run the deep routes really well. This past year, Andrew (Brewer) would throw me a lot of deep fades and post patterns, and I would just use my speed to go get them."
