6-4, 250 pound offensive lineman Mildren Montgomery had been committed to Texas Tech since June, but after a visit to Tulsa last weekend, he switched his pledge to TU.
The Oklahoma City (Okla.) Douglass lineman initially picked Tech over offers from Iowa State and North Texas. Tulsa later put their hat in the ring, and once he got the chance to spend time with Hurricane coaches, he decided to stay closer to home.
"They preach family (at Tulsa) and they really mean it," he told InsideTulsaSports.com on Monday morning. "I loved the campus and facilities, and all the coaches -- especially my position coach (Denver Johnson). My host was Chris Wallace, and we toured the campus. The coaches were very excited when I committed."
Montgomery helped Douglass go undefeated in district play (7-0), finishing 11-2 overall. His offensive line unit paved the way for 3,700 yards and 40 touchdowns on the ground. He even filled in at defensive tackle in five games, making six tackles and three sacks.
"I'm long, I can bend, and I'm strong," Montgomery said of his strengths. "I felt great about my senior season. We didn't go as far as we wanted, but I had a great career."
Montgomery is the 17th member of Tulsa's 2014 commitment list, which includes three early enrollees. He is also the eighth commitment from the state of Oklahoma and the fourth offensive linemen to join the class.
