Cedar Hill DE picks Tulsa

On Friday afternoon, shortly before taking the field at UCF, Tulsa picked up another 2015 football commitment -- this one from Cedar Hill (Texas) defensive end Trevis Gipson.

"I decided to go to Tulsa because they have very good education along with a developing football team," he told InsideTulsaSports.com moments after his commitment. "The coaching staff is so dedicated to their jobs and love being involved with the team. They are relaxed outside of football, but during the season, they are very zoned in to make sure the team gets the job done.

"The campus and facilities are great. I love their weight room along with the nutrition faculty. It feels great to know I have a good D-1 college behind me, especially knowing that it's Tulsa. Now I don't have the pressure of making a choice or searching for more offers."

An intimidating presence on the outside, standing 6-foot-5, 200-pounds with a 7-foot wingspan, Gipson has experience at outside linebacker as well, but TU recruited him to play up front.

"Tulsa will be playing me at defensive end because they want me to rush the quarterback," he explained. "They are one of the top teams for sacks and getting after the QB is one of the things that I do best."

While the Golden Hurricane provided Gipson's lone scholarship offer, he had strong attention from several other college programs.

"I had plenty of other D-1 interest, but none of them came through with an offer," he said. "Plenty were close but couldn't make up their mind. I had interest from Baylor, TCU, Memphis, Utah State, Kansas and many more. I haven't taken any official visits yet but took a couple of unofficial visits. Some were to TCU, Tulsa, Baylor and Memphis."

Gipson helped Cedar Hill to an 8-2 record during the regular season, and the Longhorns begin the playoffs against Colleyville (TX) Heritage on Saturday night.

"My senior year is going great," Gipson described. "I'm not sure of my statistics, but I have seen improvements over the season as it continues.

"My strength on the football field is rushing the quarterback with quick speed and violent pass rush moves. I also need to work on getting stronger to put up a greater fight with the tackles I go against in the future and also improve my footwork."

Gipson is commitment No. 11 for Tulsa in the 2015 class, which includes seven prospects from the Lone Star State. He's also the Hurricane's third verbal pledge in the past two weeks.
