University of Tulsa sophomore guard Ben Uzoh was named to the All-Conference USA second team today, the Golden Hurricane's only all-league selection. Uzoh was Tulsa's leading scorer and third-leading rebounder this season and is one of only two C-USA players to be among the league's top-14 for both scoring and rebounds.
Starting all 29 games, the 6-foot-3 guard averages 15.1 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. He ranks seventh in C-USA for scoring and is 14th in rebounding. He also has per game averages of 2.2 assists and 1.1 steals.
Uzoh, who was a C-USA all-freshman team selection a year ago, also ranks third in C-USA for free throw percentage at 84-percent, 11th in field goal percentage at 49-percent and 13th in three-point percentage at 38-percent. He has scored in double-figures in 25 games and has led Tulsa in scoring 14 times. Uzoh has also led the Hurricane in steals 12 times, assists nine times and in six games for rebounding.
After leading No. 2 Memphis to its third straight Conference USA title, the Tigers placed junior Chris Douglas-Roberts and freshman Derrick Rose on the 2008 Conference USA First Team. The pair is joined on the first team by Houston senior Robert McKiver and juniors Stefon Jackson of UTEP and Robert Vaden of UAB, as voted by the league's 12 head coaches and select media.
UCF junior Jermaine Taylor joins Uzoh on the all-conference second team. Taylor registered four 30-point games this season and ranks fourth in C-USA with 20.7 ppg. Jeremy Wise, who became the fastest Golden Eagle to reach 1,000 career points earlier this season, is a repeat selection to the second team. Senior Joey Dorsey of Memphis and Tulane senior David Gomez round out the second team.
Five different schools were also represented on the all-conference third team. Houston senior forward Dion Dowell and SMU senior guard Jon Killen were joined on the third team by junior forwards Lawrence Kinnard of UAB, Robert Dozier of Memphis and Markel Humphrey of Marshall.
Only five of the 15 players that earned All-Conference recognition were seniors. Seven juniors, two sophomores and one freshman help comprise the squad.
