Just as Tulsa men’s basketball began preseason practice, sophomore big man Will Magnay decided to leave school and sign a professional contract with the Brisbane Bullets of Australia’s National Basketball League. He had been practicing at TU this week and was still listed on the official roster as of Wednesday morning.

Magnay signed a 3-year deal after impressing the Brisbane coaches in training sessions during the offseason. According to the Bullets official website, Magnay had already expressed interest in joining the team in the future.

The 6-foot-10 center will join the Bullets in Phoenix for an NBA preseason game against the Suns.

“We always had a long term vision for Will to be part of the club, it is exciting that it is happening now,” said Brisbane head coach Andrej Lemanis in a media release. “Will is a unique athlete, he is a true shot blocker and will be a big presence on the boards. He will make a difference to us defensively with his athleticism.”

Magnay will reportedly be contracted as a Development Player for the 2017-18 season and will then progress into the full roster for the 2018-19 season. In the Australian pro league, development players are allowed to play an unlimited number of regular season games as injury replacements for roster players.

As a true freshman for Tulsa last season, Magnay appeared in all 32 games with 13 starts and averaged 3.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 57.8-percent from the field. He also led the team with 29 blocks.

Magnay’s sudden departure opens up another scholarship in the 2018 recruiting class, leaving Tulsa coaches with two spots to fill. The Hurricane already has commitments from St. Louis University transfer Zeke Moore and Wichita Sunrise Christian forward Jal Bijiek.

Magnay was Tulsa's tallest inside presence. Returning frontcourt starters Junior Etou (6-8, 235, Sr.) and Martins Igbanu (6-8, 244, So.) will now have limited depth behind them. 6-foot-9 and 205 pound Geno Artison will be the main reserve as 6-foot-7 Nebraska transfer Jeriah Horne sits out this season.

Also listed as forwards on the roster are 6-foot-5 junior college transfer DaQuan Jeffries and 6-foot-5 junior walk-on Alex Foree.
